The inner bailey of the Tower of London.
In the foreground at left is a cordoned-off area containing the Tower's infamous execution block. One of the privileges of nobility in the Middle Ages was the right of being executed by beheading rather than hanging, which was reserved for the common people.
To the right here is the ~Gothic~ Chapel of St. Peter where Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and Lady Jane Grey are buried along with a number of other notable persons.

The inner bailey was the inner courtyard of a castle. It was protected by both the outer walls and inner walls seen in this picture.
