A drawing of a typical castle. (from David MacCauley's
Castle)
The structure was surrounded by a moat, a ditch filled with water and
crossed by a drawbridge which could be raised to deny access. The outer
walls enclosed the outer bailey, and then the inner walls enclosed the
inner bailey. Enemies who breached the outer walls still had to face the
inner walls, and inside them the keep or central tower.
